Drama Club Presents Once Upon a Mattress!

On February 24 and 25, the Junior High Drama Club presented a wonderful performance of Once Upon a Mattress. Student Director Jace Carwll shared that they valued the leadership opportunity and learning experience of being a student director and that they appreciated the way that participating in the Drama Club provides opportunities for students to push themselves out of their comfort zones. The Drama Club “is like a big family.”

Wyomissing Area Grows Girls Wrestling Program

As female wrestling continues to grow in popularity across the country, the girls wrestling program at Wyomissing Area is growing too. Currently, a group of female athletes participates on the traditionally “boys” team, but with changes occurring county-wide, Wyomissing Area hopes to create its very own female wrestling team in the near future. Throughout the county, there are four sanctioned female teams which include: Governor Mifflin, Exeter, Brandywine Heights, and Berks Catholic.

Field Trip to Philadelphia

AP United States History students took a trip to Philadelphia last month to enhance their learning and create a positive learning environment. Students did a walking tour of the city and visited the Liberty Bell building, Independence Hall, Carpenter’s Hall, 1st B.U.S., 2nd B.U.S., Christ Church, the Constitution Center, and the Eastern State Penitentiary.

Special Spartan Accomplishment: 2021 Pennsylvania High School PE Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Jodi Reardon

In March, Spartan Physical Education teacher Mrs. Jodi Reardon was recognized for her hard work and dedication at the local level representing physical education teachers in Lancaster, Lebanon, and Berks Counties as the regional 2021 High School PE Teacher of the Year. In November, Mrs. Reardon’s impact as a teacher was recognized state-wide when she earned recognition as the Pennsylvania High School PE Teacher of the Year. This is a huge accomplishment for Mrs. Reardon and shines a light on the great things our Physical Education Department does for our Spartan students.

Wyomissing Area Spartans End the Streak

The Wyomissing Area Spartans football team has had a fantastic season right from the start but knew they faced a big challenge in their game against the Southern Columbia Tigers in early October. The Tigers have won four consecutive State Championships and entered the game in the middle of a 65-game winning streak, the longest active streak in the nation.

Special Spartan Accomplishment: National Merit Semi-Finalists

Every Fall, high school juniors at Wyomissing Area and nearly four million students nationwide take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test), as a practice testing experience in preparation for taking the SAT. Students taking the exam are automatically placed in the running for the National Merit Scholarship which is both an academic honor and college scholarship.

West Reading Elementary Center Partners with Olivet Boys’ and Girls’ Club

Starting in late September of this year, the West Reading Elementary Center has partnered with the Olivet Boys’ and Girls’ Club to establish an Olivet after-school program at the WREC building. The program will begin serving students in grades five and six but will eventually open to students in grades three through seven.

Per the recent school closures due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), free school breakfast and lunch will be made available to all students of the Wyomissing Area School District, starting Tuesday, March 17, 2020. Meals will be made available Monday through Friday during school closures (no meals on weekends). Grab and Go meals will be offered at each school between 11 am and 12:30 pm.

After years of writing, illustrating, and revising, Dr. Corbett Babb, WREC Principal, and Mr. Michael Miller, WREC and JSHS art teacher, celebrated the publishing of their book Melody’s Gift on September 20. WAEF honored the pair at a book launch celebration for district staff, faculty members, and WAEF board members at the home of the Carlino family in Wyomissing. In addition to a night of fun and food, each attendant received a signed copy of the book.

Celebrating the Class of 2019 During Wyomissing Area Senior High’s 95th commencement ceremony, 150 graduates received their diplomas on Friday, June 7, at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. Student speakers included Valedictorian Joanna Helm, Salutatorian Benjamin Chen, President of the Class of 2019, Fanny Ortiz, Class Secretary, Grace Gleason, Class Treasurer, Mia Huber, and Class Vice President, Samantha Zechman. Joanne Helm addressed her peers, “Let us all remember to start each day with grateful hearts and let us go into this exciting new chapter with a voracious will to live.” Benjamin Chen shared, "This class has been one of the most passionate and caring in Wyomissing Area history. Passion is what I find best defines this group of individuals. Our deeper exploration in subjects outside what is taught in class allows us to find our true interests and go beyond." Grace Gleason recalled advice from her parents, "Remember who you are and what you represent." "The Class of 2019 will be remembered for its commitment, dedication, and excellence in academics, athletics, the arts and community service," said Dr. Corey Jones, principal. "It was truly a pleasure to have them and their families in our building and community." Senior Spotlight - Trevor Beane Trevor Beane will continue his education at the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, majoring in Electrical Technology. He was inspired to pursue this education by the Berks Career & Technology Center. Trevor will also play football in college.

The LOVE Team of West Reading presented a check to the West Reading Elementary Center and the Wyomissing Area Education Foundation (WAEF) representing the proceeds from this past fall’s Giving Goes Glam fundraiser, held at the Neag Planetarium on October 3, 2018. Based on the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, more commonly known as THON, the Wyomissing Area Mini-THON has raised more than $250,000 since it began. Students brought history to life by portraying famous historical figures at the 2019 West Reading Elementary Center Wax Museum. Sixth-grade students posed as wax statues until visitors activated their station by dropping a coin into a bag. Once their station was activated, the students began to move and talk, presenting a dramatic living biography complete with props and beautifully decorated backdrops.

It has been discovered that the millage rate was rounded inaccurately on the 2018 real estate tax bills issued on July 1, 2018. The millage rate that appeared on the 2018 real estate tax bill was 30.668. The correct millage rate should have been 30.6678. The rounding of the millage resulted in a slight over taxation that ranges from $.00 to $1.00, depending on assessed value of the property.

Construction Begins at JSHS

Phase II of the Wyomissing Area JSHS construction project will begin on the last student day of the 2017–18 academic year. This phase includes infrastructure upgrades such as replacing HVAC from the 1990s, replacing ceiling tiles, changing carpeted classrooms to tile, painting classrooms, installing security locks, and converting classroom lighting to LED.
